India and West Indies are set to lock horns in a three-match ODI series, followed by as many T20 internationals, starting from 6^th February 2022. India will be led by their new full-time captain in Rohit Sharma. He will be making his comeback in the side after recovering from the hamstring injury. KL Rahul, who is the vice-captain in the white-ball format, will miss the first ODI due to his sister’s marriage.

For those of you who don’t know, seven members of the Indian contingent, including four players have been tested positive for Covid-19. The four players are Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer and Navdeep Saini. BCCI recently added Ishan Kishan and Mayank Agarwal into the ODI squad and the former is likely to open the batting alongside Rohit Sharma in the first ODI.

A couple of notable inclusions in the ODI squad are Kuldeep Yadav and Deepak Hooda. Kuldeep Yadav hasn’t had any competitive cricket for the last six months. However, the management has turned to him after India failed to pick wickets in the middle-overs in South Africa.

Besides, Deepak Hooda too made the cut. With Shreyas Iyer not available for the first ODI, Hooda might be added to the playing XI for the first game. India’s two of the most experienced pacers, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami both have been rested for the series. In their absence, the likes of M Siraj, Deepak Chahal and Prasidh Krishna will share the fast bowling duties.

West Indies, on the other hand, are expected to give a strong fight to the Indian team. They have a pretty solid squad at their disposal. Also, given the fact that they have recently won a T20 series against England at home, there would be no shortage of confidence.

West Indies have got a pretty solid batting unit. The depth in the batting line-up would allow them to play with an attacking mindset. Shai Hope will continue to open the batting with Brandon King, while the middle-order consist of the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks etc. The latter was brilliant with the bat in the last ODI series against Ireland.

Whether he would be able to translate that form against India remains to be seen. The presence of numerous all-rounders such as Kieron Pollard, Jason Holder, Odean Smith and Romario Shepherd makes West Indies a formidable side in white-ball cricket.

One of the biggest reasons behind the West Indies’ ODI series defeat against Ireland was their inability to pick wickets early on in the power play. To counter that problem, they have added Kemar Roach into the side.

He last played an ODI for West Indies against India in 2019. It will be interesting to see if he can make a strong comeback to the white-ball set-up. Roach will share the fast bowling duties alongside Jason Holder, Odean Smith and Romario Shepherd. As for the spin, Akeal Hosein remains the obvious choice.
