Pakistan’s Asif Ali and Afghanistan’s Fareed Ahmed have been punished by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for their mid-pitch altercation on September 7, 2022, at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium where Babar Azam’s men defeated Mohammad Nabi and co by one wicket to eliminate them and India out of the Asia Cup 2022 tournament.

Chasing just 130 to win the game and qualify for the final, Pakistan’s chase was hampered by constant fall of wickets as Fazalhaq Farooqi and Fareed Ahmed picked 3/31 each, and Rashid Khan took 2/25.

Coming into the last over, Pakistan needed 11 runs and they had one wicket in the hand. Naseem Shah proved to be the hero for the Men in Green, as he hit 2 sixes on consecutive balls to take Pakistan into the Asia Cup 2022 final, where they will clash against Sri Lanka on September 11.

Fareed Ahmed And Asif Ali Found Guilty Of Breaching Level 1 Of The ICC Code Of Conduct

During the 19th over of the chase, Asif Ali had hammered a huge six of Fareed which the Afghanistani bowlers didn’t like. At the next ball, Fareed had Asif caught by Karim Janat and celebrated with enthusiasm and some extra spice, giving Asif a mouthful as a sendoff.

Asif in return pushed Fareed away and then threatened to hit him with the bat before umpires and players separated them.

In view of the physical altercation which took place, the ICC punished both players for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The pair have been fined 25% of their match fees for an altercation.

Asif breached Article 2.6 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International Match” while Fareed was found to have breached Article 2.1.12, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match.”

The players admitted their offense and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft.
