The T20 Asia Cup is anticipated to begin in the United Arab Emirates from August 24-September 10, with Sri Lanka remaining to serve as the host country.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has stated that due to the country’s financial challenges, it would be unable to host the Cup.

“In all likelihood, the Asia Cup, which served as a warm-up for the upcoming World Cup in Australia, will now be held in the United Arab Emirates.

Due to the country’s current economic and political situation, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) informed the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Wednesday that they are unable to host the prestigious Asia Cup T20.

The third season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) has also been postponed by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) due to the ongoing political unrest in the nation.

Asia Cup will run till September 10: Sources

The qualifying round will begin on August 24, which might very likely be the event’s opening date.

The Asia Cup will run until September 10 or 11, as per a source. The host country will still be the Sri Lankan Board.

The Lanka Board, the Asian Cricket Council, and the Board and government of the United Arab Emirates are willing to make a deal to finalize the event’s procedures.

The announcement is anticipated to be made once pertinent recommendations have been accepted by all parties, a source from the Asian Cricket Council informed ‘The News.

Notably, the Asia Cup 2022 had already been delayed twice, once in 2020 due to Covid-19 and then in 2021. On August 24, 2022, qualifying for the Asia Cup, a 20-over competition, is anticipated to start. Additionally, six teams—India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and one qualifier—will compete in the tournament.
