Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan’s place in the squad might be up for grabs if he fails to back out of his latest sponsorship deal with a betting company, BCB President, Najmul Hasan Papon said.
Shakib has been given time until the end of Thursday to decide on his stance regarding the matter. Depending on his answer, his participation in the upcoming Asia Cup will be decided.
“There is no second choice. BCB’s position is still the same as it was from the beginning. I said earlier that zero tolerance will be maintained in this regard, BCB will not accept these. There is no chance of association with these. For which we have to exclude players like Ashraful,” Papon was quoted as saying to the media on Thursday.
“We will wait till today and decide whether he’ll be included in the team” – Papon on Shakib al Hasan
The BCB received an extension in order to name their squad for the 6-nation event but they will wait for Shakib’s response to the letter sent by the board.
“We have sent him a letter. The letter should be answered by today. It was supposed to be received by yesterday. I heard it will be given today. We will wait till today and decide whether he’ll be included in the team or not.”
“It is not possible to have any involvement. Shakib must come out of it completely. Otherwise, he will not be in the team, and the T20 captaincy comes after that. This decision is already taken,” he added.
The tournament will take place in the UAE with the first game set to be played on August 27.
