Ex-India batsman Rohan Gavaskar made a strong opinion, suggesting the Indian batting lineup needs to revolve around Suryakumar Yadav if the Rohit Sharma-led side wants to win the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

SKY gave a sheer testament to his prowess after smashing an unbeaten 68 of just 26 balls to propel India to an emphatic win over Hong Kong in Dubai on Wednesday. His belligerent knock ensured the defending champions beat Nizakat Khan’s side by 40 runs and seal their berth in the Super Fours of Asia Cup 2022.

Suryakumar Yadav should be allowed to choose his position in the batting line-up

During an interaction on the Sports 18 show ‘Sports Over the Top’, Gavaskar was asked about his thoughts on Yadav’s knock. The 46-year-old said that Suryakumar should be allowed to choose his batting position in the Indian lineup.

“We have seen him open, we have seen him bat at No. 3 and No. 4. Is it you feel you can create the most damage opening the innings, or at No. 3 or No. 4. Then listen to what he says and give him that free rein.”

Gavaskar concluded by opening Yadav’s importance to India’s World Cup prospects. “He was just phenomenal and he made sure that we had that little bit of cushion against a team like Hong Kong. As I have said many times before, if you have to really progress in the World Cup, SKY is going to be such an influential part in that team and play such an influential role.”

There is a chance for an encore as Rohit Sharma’s men might face Pakistan once again in the Super Fours of the Asia Cup 2022. The Men in Blue qualified for the last four on the back of successive wins in its group which also comprises Pakistan. Earlier on Tuesday, Afghanistan qualified for the last four after beating Bangladesh.

Two-time defending champion, India, had won the inaugural edition of the Asia Cup T20 held in Bangladesh in 2016. It also won the previous edition held in the UAE under Rohit Sharma. India so far has won 18 of the 24 T20Is it has played so far this year – its best across any calendar year. The victory places Pakistan and Hong Kong in a virtual knockout match for the second Super 4 spot.

If Pakistan beats Hong Kong, it will meet India once again on Sunday in Dubai.
