Bangladesh will be led by Shakib Al Hasan in the upcoming Asia Cup edition in the UAE. Shakib will lead a 17-member side in the upcoming Asian tournament. Experienced players like Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim are also a part of the side. The Tigers were the finalists of the 2018 Asia Cup losing out to India in the summit clash.

Shakib had to terminate his contract with a betting company as he came back to the national side as the skipper for the Asia Cup. He replaced Nurul Hasan who led Bangladesh in the T20I series against Zimbabwe. Mosaddek Hossain captained the team in the final of three T20Is in Zimbabwe, which Bangladesh lost 2-1. In addition, under Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh lost the subsequent ODIs in Zimbabwe.

“My only aim is that we can do well in the (T20) World Cup and these are the preparations for it. If someone thinks that I can change things within one or two days or that someone else will come to change it, then we are living in a fool’s kingdom. If you are able to think practically, our true development will be seen when the team really does well in the World Cup in three months’ time, “ said Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan.

Bangladesh are placed alongside Afghanistan and Sri Lanka in group B. They play their first game against Afghanistan on August 30 in Sharjah. After the Asia Cup, they will play a T20I tri-series involving New Zealand and Pakistan in their build-up to the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Though the side has not won the Asia Cup so far, Bangladesh have finished runner-up three times at the event in 2012, 2016 and 2018 with Shakib playing a key role in those campaigns in the past.
