Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav made a cheeky remark about India’s opening position after his heroics against Hong Kong on Wednesday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Suryakumar was unbeaten on 68 off 26 balls, striking at 261.54, and stitched an undefeated 98-run stand with Virat Kohli (59*) to propel India’s score to 192/2.
India won the match by 40 runs after restricting Hong Kong at 152/5 in the second innings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan and Ravindra Jadeja picked a wicket apiece.
Suryakumar was experimented with as an opening batter along with skipper Rohit Sharma during the West Indies T20Is last month. Indian opener KL Rahul faced the wrath of fans and experts for a sluggish approach in his 39-ball 36-run knock against Hong Kong.

During the post-match press conference, Suryakumar was asked whether he would be opening anytime in the continental event, and the 31-year-old questioned Rahul’s position.
“(Smiles) Aap bol rahe ho ke KL bhai ko nahi khilana chahiye? (So you mean to say that KL should be dropped?)” Suryakumar said in a funny tone.
KL Rahul needs some time: Suryakumar Yadav
Rahul is coming from an injury break and is struggling to find form. He went for a golden duck in the first match against Pakistan. Suryakumar backed his teammate and said he needs some time to get into the groove.
“He (Rahul) is coming back from injury, he also needs some time. We have some time right now. As far as I am concerned, I have always said that I am very flexible to bat at any number. I have told the coach and captain that make me bat at any number, but just play me,” Suryakumar said.
India became the second team after Afghanistan to qualify for the Super 4 stage. The winners of Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh and Pakistan vs Hong Kong will make their way for the Super 4 stage.
