Former Pakistan National Cricket Team pacer Waqar Younis has questioned Team India’s decision to bench young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant in the Asia Cup 2022 high-profile clash against Pakistan National Cricket Team.
India’s top-3 in T20Is consists of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya are the other two batters who have cemented their place in the playing XI, which leaves room for only one wicketkeeper-batsman among Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik.
India preferred veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik over Pant in the previous India-Pakistan clash. The young wicketkeeper-batsman, who leads Delhi Capitals in the IPL, returned to playing XI against Hong Kong, replacing Hardik Pandya, who was rested, however, he didn’t get a chance to spend time out in the middle.
Meanwhile, Pakistan fast-bowling great Waqar Younis said that Pant should be part of India’s top 4. He also labelled the 24-year-old as the most dangerous batter in the Indian team.
“This is a luxury. Aapke bench pe jo ladka baitha hua hai… hum sab baatein karenge ke woh khel kyu nai raha? That’s a big plus for India. Jis tareeke se Pant khelta hai, it’s amazing to watch from the commentary box.
“Even viewers love the way he plays. I feel he should be a part of the top 4. During field restrictions, I don’t see a more dangerous batter than him,” Younis told sports journalist Vimal Kumar in an interaction hosted by OneCricket.
Rahul Dravid Opens Up On Dinesh Karthik vs Rishabh Pant Debate
At a pre-match press conference ahead of the India-Pakistan Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 stage clash, India head coach Rahul Dravid talked about the Dinesh Karthik vs Rishabh Pant debate.
“There’s no first-choice wicketkeeper in the side… We play according to the conditions, situation, opposition and what we feel is the best XI. There’s no such a thing as first choice playing XI for every single condition.
“That will vary. On that day against Pakistan, we felt Dinesh was the right choice for us,” said Dravid during a presser.
“It’s very difficult to leave out anyone, but we are focused on picking the best XI. We have a little bit of squad culture in our side who believe that we have a very good squad of XV and anyone can play,” he added.
