Former India skipper Virat Kohli hit 35 runs in the run chase against Pakistan in their first 2022 Asia Cup match on Sunday. After a promising start in the high-pressure encounter in Dubai, the 33-year-old got out to a poor shot off Mohammad Nawaz.

He returned to action after a month of rest following the team’s tour of the West Indies and Zimbabwe.

India’s attempt to win the game and exact some sort of retribution for losing the T20 World Cup 2021 got off to a horrible start when Naseem Shah, a rookie bowler, dismissed KL Rahul. Before Mohammad Nawaz dismissed both of them, Virat Kohli (35) and Rohit Sharma (12) performed admirably for a while.

It all came down to Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja to lead India to the victory in the final over after Suryakumar Yadav was also bowled out for 18 runs. With five wickets in hand, India won with 52 runs from Ravindra Jadeja (35) and Hardik Pandya (33* in 17 balls).

While he struggled at first, he gradually regained his rhythm as the innings went on. However, an erroneous shot coming down the track against Nawaz proved fatal.

Ajay Jadeja claimed on Cricbuzz that Kohli does not throw away his wickets in this manner, especially during run chases:

“Kohli stated that he had not batted in a month. It appeared that way until after seeing how he played an opening couple of balls. However, class is permanent. He typically does not depart in this manner. When Jadeja came to bat, he had to adjust his approach because the team’s plans had changed.”

Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya’s 52-run partnership allowed India to reduce their lead to seven runs off the final six balls. Pandya, who received Player of the Match honors, ended the game with six and two balls remaining.

On Wednesday, August 31, in Dubai, India will face off against Hong Kong.
