Former India National Cricket Team head coach Ravi Shastri has said that the new attacking approach of the Rohit Sharma-led Team India is the right approach for T20 International (T20I) cricket.

The Men In Blue have been playing a new brand of cricket in T20I cricket in the Rohit-Dravid era. Notably, India have adopted an ultra-aggressive batting approach that has benefitted them a lot.

Speaking to Star Sports, Ravi Shastri said that he had discussed India’s timid approach at the top during his tenure as head coach of the side. He added that Team India should not change their attacking approach in T20Is.

“They should not change the approach. Even when I was coach we discussed we were a bit timid at the top considering the players we had down the order,” Shastri said.

“It is the right approach. You will lose a few games in between but if you start winning with this approach you can take that confidence in big games and use the same tactics,” he added.

The duo of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul will be returning to the side in the Asia Cup 2022 after a significant time away from competitive action in T20Is. Notably, Kohli has played only 4 T20Is for India in 2022 and Rahul is yet to play a game for India in T20Is in 2022.

Meanwhile, Shastri said that Kohli and Rahul would easily adapt to India’s new attacking approach, despite not playing a lot of T20Is in 2022.

“Why not? They are very experienced players. They have played enough IPL and T20s and it should not be tough for them to adjust. With Rishabh, Hardik, Jadeja there is enough depth in the middle and lower order to get the innings back on track if top order falls cheaply.”

Shastri further talked about Kohli, who has been going through a lengthy lean patch, and said that the former India captain would have learnt new things during his rough patch and he will make a strong comeback in the Asia Cup.

“I haven’t spoken to him (recently). It is not rocket science. Mental fatigue can creep into the best in the world. This down time was not just needed for his body but to reflect,” the 60-year-old said.

“He will come back with a much calmer mind. He gets 50 in the first game, mouths will be shut. Public memory is very short and works both ways.

“There is no cricketer fitter than him. People keep saying one innings can make a difference but with a player like Kohli it makes a massive difference. His hunger and passion remains undiminished. He would have learnt from this phase let me tell you that,” he said.
