Sri Lanka Squad For Asia Cup 2022

Sri Lanka Cricket Board named an 18-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022. The tournament was initially to be hosted by Sri Lanka but was finally moved to the UAE due to the economic and political crisis in the country. They will, however, continue to be the hosts of the tournament. 

The Asia Cup 2022 matches will be played in Dubai and Sharjah. Sri Lanka are placed in group B alongside Afghanistan and Bangladesh. They will play the first game f the tournament against Afghanistan on August 27 to get the campaign started, The much-awaited India-Pakistan clash from group A will be held in Dubai the next day, August 28.

Dasun Shanaka will lead the side with Charith Asalanka as his deputy. Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews is not a part of the side while Dinesh Chandimal has been selected. Wanindu Hasaqranga and Maheesh Threekshana are the two spin twins to watch out for from the Lankan side. Dushmantha Chameera and Matheesha Pathirana are the reputed pacers on the side.

Binura Fernando and Kasun Rajitha were selected for the original squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. However, they suffered injuries during the SLC Invitational T20 League 2022, as a result, they have been ruled out of the tournament. Asitha Fernando and Pramod Madushan are set to replace Binura and Kasun in the squad once SLC gets the approval.

“Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee at a meeting held on the 10th August 2022, selected the following squad to take part in the Men’s Asia Cup 2022. The Honorable Minister of Sports Roshan Ranasinghe gave his approval for the squad, which was submitted to the Ministry of Sports on the 12th August 2022,” SLC said in an official statement.

The side last won a major trophy in 2014 when they won the T20 World Cup title under Kumar Sangakkara’s captaincy. Since then, the side has gone through a lot of transitions and changes in personnel. They will be harbouring hopes of winning the Asia Cup before heading into the T20 World Cup later this year.
