Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Najam Sethi revealed that their cricketing board will suffer a loss of $3 million if they boycott the Asia Cup 2023. He said that they have earned enough from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and are not dependent on the ICC for money now.

The Asia Cup 2023, which is slated to take place in Pakistan, has come under a lot of scrutiny even before it started. BCCI is not keen to travel to Pakistan for the tournament due to security reasons. The Men in Green on the other hand have been bold too and reportedly had said that they will also not travel to India for World Cup if they don’t come.

Recently a hybrid model was proposed according to which, the tournament will be played in Pakistan apart from India games, which will play their matches in either England, UAE, or Oman. PCB also confirmed that they are in talks with the BCCI and the hybrid mode for the tournament is in discussions.

Amid all the talks, PCB chairman Najam Sethi has revealed that they will face a loss of $3 million if they don’t play in the tournament and also said that not going to India for the World Cup will hamper their relations with ICC. In an interview with a local TV channel, he said:

IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)

“If we don’t play Asia Cup, we will face a loss of $3 million. If we don’t play World Cup or boycott it, then our relations with ICC will worsen.  India and Pakistan game in a World Cup also holds great significance. Issues will arise.”

Asia Cup 2023: “We have decided that we are ready to bear loss of $3 million in order to protect our honour,” says Najam Sethi

Najam Sethi further went on to say that they are no longer dependent on the ICC for the money as PSL has raised their funds and if it comes to their honor, they are ready to bear the loss. He added:

“As far as finances are concerned, my personal opinion is that in the past, PCB was dependent on the money from ICC, so we had to agree to their terms. However, now PSL has made PCB financially independent. We get the same amount from PSL, which we receive from ICC.

“We have decided that we are ready to bear loss of $3 million in order to protect our honour and political stance. I know people don’t want us to go to India if India doesn’t come to Pakistan. People want us to stand our ground and not be dictated.”

Asia Cup is originally scheduled to take place in September. The tournament will see six teams clashing with each other in 13 matches. Six teams have been divided into two groups with three teams each. India and Pakistan are placed in group A along with a qualifier whereas Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan are placed in group B.
