Team India has been experimenting with players for the past ten months to find the best combination ahead of the World Cup. Despite a brilliant start in the league stage, Team India once again failed in multi-nation tournaments like the Asia Cup, losing to Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super 4s.

Former India chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar criticized captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid for the team’s performance in the Asia Cup.

Asia Cup Is a Very Big Tournament – Dilip Vengsarkar

Vengsarkar told Khaleej Times that team management should understand that big tournament like the Asia Cup is also important. It builds confidence in the team. It is important to find successful combinations. But such experiments should not be done in major tournaments.

“The team is going ahead with their experiments. They picked Dinesh Karthik, but they haven’t played him, and then they played Ravichandran Ashwin for the first time yesterday (Tuesday) against Sri Lanka, ”he said.

“Obviously, the team management wants to give all the players a chance as they are trying to find their best XI for next month’s World Cup. But then this event is also very important. The Asia Cup is a very big tournament. Winning matches in a tournament like this is very important for the morale of the team.”

The team management should conduct such experiments in a bilateral series to give a chance for everyone in team in view of the World Cup which will be held next month.

“Also, I think it’s important to have the winning combination. As I said, the Asia Cup is a very big event. You can experiment maybe in a bilateral series, but the Asia Cups and the World Cup, are major tournaments. In these tournaments, you need to win, that’s very important,” he added.

Team India will play 6 T20 matches before leaving for the T20 World Cup 2022 to be held in Australia. Rohit Sharma’s team will play a 3-match series against Australia from September 20. After that, they will play a limited-overs series against South Africa.
