The IND vs AUS Test series culminates the WTC 2021-23 cycle. India needs to win the Test series to play the final against Australia. The Aussies are topping the WTC points table with 136 points from 15 Test matches. India are placed second with 99 points from 14 matches.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 series will be played across four different venues in India. The Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha, Nagpur will host the first Test from February 9 to 13, and the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi will host the second Test from February 17 to 21.

The third Test will be played at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala from March 1 to 5 and the fourth Test will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad from March 9 to 13. The fourth Test might be a D/N affair as per reports.

This will also be the final edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a four-match Test series. According to the ICC’s Future Tours & Programme (FTP), it will be contested over five tests beginning in 2024.

Meanwhile, in this article, we take a look at India’s Squad from the 2017-18 Test series against Australia and where are they now. Virat Kohli back then was the skipper of the Indian team across formats. India won the series 201 at home with both teams playing some quality cricket.

Kohli was the captain of the Indian team across formats during that time of his career. He was also batting supremely differently during that phase of his career. The right-hander was churning out hundreds on a regular basis and scoring tons of runs. Virat scored 1000 runs in Test cricket during the 2017-2018 period. Now, he is no longer the skipper, but still a very important player nonetheless. After struggling to score centuries for almost three years, he has now scored four in recent times including one in T20I cricket.

Murali Vijay

Vijay was one of India’s openers in that series. He is among the few Indian batters with over 1000 runs in Test matches. The right-hander announced his international retirement on January 30 having played his last Test for India in 2018. In between, he played a few IPL games. He played last in the IPL in 2020 for CSK.

Abhinav Mukund

The southpaw was a part of the Indian squad for the 2017 Test series. Overall, he played seven Test matches and three IPL games He is yet to retire from international cricket but has not played domestic cricket for a long time. He last played his last FC match for Tamil Nadu in 2020.

Cheteshwar Pujara

Cheteshwar Pujara was a key player back in that series and is important for India in Test matches even now. He is fresh off his 19th Test ton for India in the series against Bangladesh. Pujara scored 271 runs with three fifties in the previous series between the two teams. Pujara is two short of playing 100 Test matches for India.

Ajinkya Rahane

Rahane scored 198 runs in the 2017-18 series at home. However, the veteran player is not anywhere close to the Indian cricket circle as of now. He led India to a famous 2-1 series win during the 2021 series down under. He is playing Ranji Trophy cricket for Mumbai at the moment having scored 634 runs in seven matches with two hundreds.

Karun Nair

Nair made his India debut in the 2016 series against England. He played three Test against England. The talented batter was picked for the Australia series at home and played three Test matches. Overall, he played six Test matches for India and is nowhere close to Indian cricket circles at the moment. He is now playing domestic cricket for Karnataka having played his last match in June 2022 against UP. Nair is one of the two Indian batters to score 300 in Test cricket.

KL Rahul

Rahul was still new to international cricket during the 2017 Test series against Australia. He is now the vice-captain of the Indian cricket team and will be Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the series. Rahul has prospered as a player and is considered a player with natural talent. He is currently on a break from international cricket for personal reasons before the Test series.

Wriddhiman Saha (WK)

Back then Saha was still India’s first-choice keeper in Test matches. He was also a batter who contributed regularly with the bat for his side. Ever since the rise of Rishabh Pant in Test matches, Saha became a backup keeper to now being completely out of national selection. The Bengal keeper last played for India in 2021 against New Zealand.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Ashwin was the second-highest wicket-taker in the series with 21 wickets in the four-match series. He has 89 wickets against the Aussies and has a chance to get to 100 wickets against them in the series. He has grown in experience since the 2017 tour and has developed into a matchwinner with time.

Ravindra Jadeja

Jadeja was the highest wicket-taker in the 2017 series against Australia with 25 wickets from four Test matches. Currently, he is out of the Indian team as he is nursing an injury. He has been out of the team since the T20 World Cup and has missed every series India have played since then. He is in the squad for the 2023 series but his participation is subject to fitness.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvi was a part of India’s Test squad for the series. Back then he was playing Test cricket for the Men in Blue apart from playing the white-ball formats. He played just one Test match in the series. The veteran pacer played in the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup. He last played for India in the T20I series against New Zealand in 2022.

Umesh Yadav

Umesh was India’s first-choice pacer in the series. The veteran pacer was a few years youngsters and probably at the prime of his international career. He played all four Test matches and picked up 17 wickets. He has grown in experience since then and has groomed young bowlers under him. He is a part of the 2022 series as well.

Ishant Sharma

Ishant was a regular in India’s test side back then. However, he did not have a good series as he picked up just three wickets in three Tests and conceded over 200 runs in the series. The veteran pacer played his last Test match against New Zealand in 2021 in Kanpur. He will be playing for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023.

Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep was a part of the Test series and played the fourth Test in Dharamsala. He picked up four wickets in the first innings of the Test match. The chinaman bowler made his Test debut in that series and had a slight dip in his international career in the last two years. However, he is well and truly back in form and is a part of this series as well.

Jayant Yadav

Jayant Yadav played the first Test in Pune after making his Test debut in the series against England. He played his last test match for India against Sri Lanka in 2022. He was retained by Gujarat Titans ahead of IPL 2023 and will play for them later this year.
