Virat Kohli’s 122-run performance in a T20I match created a discussion on whether the Indian batsman should continue to open for the side in those matches, and Harbhajan Singh offered their opinion.

With the 71st international century that the world of cricket had been waiting for 1019 days, Kohli silenced his critics. In his first T20I century, Kohli scored an undefeated 122 off 61 balls, and on Thursday, he returned life to normal by leading India to a decisive 101-run victory against Afghanistan in their final Asia Cup 2022 match.

As the team continues to prepare for the T20 World Cup in October, it was for the majority of people the biggest positive for the Indian team in an otherwise forgettable Asia Cup tournament in the UAE. However, for a select few, the knock sparked a discussion about whether the India batter should continue to open for the team in T20Is.

KL Rahul  With Rohit Sharma as his partner at the top of the order, Rahul has been India’s go-to opener in T20 international cricket. But the hitter, who had just recently returned to cricket after a lengthy injury layoff, had a really bad Asia Cup outing. Kohli, on the other side, has made a spectacular comeback to form after a month off, scoring two fifty-run innings and a hundred to lead the competition in runs scored.

Virat Kohli had done the job previously for RCB in IPL: Harbhajan

After the game, Harbhajan agreed with the argument, telling India Today that Kohli has previously performed the role for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.

“When he began the innings for RCB while he was captaining, he scored 921 runs in one season, so this job is not unfamiliar to him; in fact, he seems to enjoy playing that position,” Harbhajan said.

“Indian team needs to see what they need to do going forward whether they want to have a combo of Virat Kohli and Rohit starting the innings and KL bat at No. 3. The management needs to decide whether this can be plan B of plan A. For me, Virat is a top, top player, no doubt about it. So are KL Rahul and Rohit,” he added.

“Yeah, Virat opening would be a brilliant idea, going forward. But I am not sure if Rahul will stick with that.”

On Thursday, Kohli opened with Rahul while Rohit was rested from the meaningless encounter against Afghanistan, and the former captain looked like his old self, smashing a slew of records with his unbeaten performance.
