After a disappointing Asia Cup campaign, Team India brace themselves to face Australia for a three-match T20I series. The first of the three games will be played in Mohali on September 20.

The next two games will be played in Nagpur (Sep 23) and Hyderabad (Sep 25). Both India and Australia will face each other in a T20I match after almost one and a half years. Both the teams last faced each other in a T20I series in December 2020.

India last played in the Asia Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. They won both league games and lost against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super 4s to bow out of the tournament.

The Lankans ultimately won the title for the sixth time. Asia Cup was a big Test for India and the team did not capitalise on the opportunities.

They now have six games before the T20 World Cup to iron out wherever wrinkles the management have in terms of finding the ideal combination for the world event.

Ahead of the T20I series against Australia, the Indian team dealt with a huge blow. Mohammed Shami who was picked for the three T20Is has been ruled out due to covid. Shami has not travelled with the team to Mohali where both teams have reached the first T20I. Umesh Yadav has been signed up as Shami’s replacement. He is making a comeback to the white-ball team for the first time since February 2019.

The BCCI announced a 16-member Indian squad for the three-match series. Along with the squad for the Australia T20Is, the BCCI also announced the squads for the T20 World Cup 2022 and the South Africa T20Is series. All these players playing the Australia T20Is will be playing the T20 World Cup as well; thus, this series is important for all of them to get into their groove or get back into form.

Australia recently played a three-match ODI series against New Zealand at home. Australia managed to win all the games and bagged a clean sweep. Australia crushed New Zealand by 2 wickets in the 1st ODI, 113 runs in the 2nd ODI, and 25 runs in the 3rd ODI.

Regular skipper Aaron Finch stepped down as the ODI captain of the side following his long run of low-scores. The Australian Cricket Board will soon announce the next ODI captain. Finch, however, will lead the side in T20Is and the side in the World Cup at home. They have a chance to defend their title.

No team has ever defended the T20 title and the Aussies can be the first team to do so. Playing against India, the team can have a good build-up to the mega event in a month’s time.

Australia Squad

Aaron Finch (Captain), Steven Smith, Tim David, Glenn Maxwell, Ashton Agar, Cameron Green, Daniel Sams, Sean Abbott, Josh Inglis, Matthew Wade, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa, Nathan Ellis
