In light of the growth of lucrative T20 leagues throughout the world, Australia’s opening batsman David Warner expressed fear for the future of Test cricket as young players focus on “short-term” objectives.

Oliver Davies of the Sydney Thunder, who has played in more than 200 limited overs matches, was one of Warner’s younger team members in who he tried to instill a sense of the value of the longest format. Warner has played 101 Tests and more than 200 ODIs.

During his time in the Big Bash League, Warner claimed he tried to make Davies and his younger teammates aware of the value of playing Test cricket. Warner, who has participated in 101 Tests and 240 limited-overs games, emphasized the significance of helping new cricketers appreciate the legacy-building aspects of playing Test cricket.

“I spoke with Davies the other day. He prefers white-ball cricket, and I don’t see him ever playing red-ball cricket,” Warner told reporters.

“If he wants to put his mind to it, he can definitely play. But I’ve got a little bit of scaredness about what’s going to happen in the next five to 10 years, where cricket is actually heading. I’d love for guys coming through to play red-ball cricket and play test cricket because that’s the legacy that you should want to leave behind,” David Warner Added.

Top Australian cricketers Tim David, Chris Lynn, and Marcus Stoinis have all had successful international T20 careers without taking part in any tests.

Warner added that just a small number of cricketers have been able to maintain relevancy for an extended period of time without playing red-ball cricket and that it is impossible for a batsman to have a long and successful career without playing Test cricket.

“There’s only been a small minority of people who have been able to do that and have a long career (without Tests),” said the 36-year-old.

“Guys see the short term at the moment with all the leagues and stuff around, The best way to get value for your currency is actually making a name for yourself” David Warner Added.

Notably, the International Cricket Council launched the World Test Championship in 2019 to provide greater context to Test matches in the face of declining attendance at the traditional version of the game.
Warner will arrive in India later in the day as Australia prepares for a four-match series against the Asian powers beginning February 9.
