Young batter Sarfaraz Khan has not been included in the 17-member Test squad for the first two matches of the upcoming four-match series between India and Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2023. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that Sarfaraz Khan deserves a place in the squad after scoring a lot of runs in first-class cricket over the past few years.

The 25-year-old has been a consistent performer for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, scoring 2446 runs in the last three editions. The right-handed batsman has scored 556 runs in six matches with an average of 92.66, including three centuries and one half-century in the ongoing season. He was the leading scorer with 982 runs at an average of 122.75 in just 9 innings in the previous season.

On the Akashavani show on JioCinema, Aakash Chopra said that Sarfaraz Khan has scored the most runs in red-ball cricket to be selected in the Test team. The former India opener feels that Sarfraz would have made his international debut had he been part of the team.

“It is an extremely legit question because he has scored more runs than anyone should score to come into the Indian team. If you score so many runs, the expectation is that you will get an opportunity,” Aakash Chopra said.

“To be very honest, hypothetically, if Sarfaraz was there, there was a possibility that Rahul would have opened, Shubman would have had to wait, just like Ishan Kishan waited for him even after scoring a double century, and you might have given a debut to Sarfaraz Khan at No. 5. I am with you, we are all saying that you should play Sarfaraz,” he added.

Sarfaraz was not included in the Test squad despite his consistent performances in domestic cricket, while fellow Mumbai cricketer Suryakumar Yadav was chosen ahead of him due to his T20I performance. Suryakumar is likely to make his Test debut, as Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to be fit for the first Test match.
