Over the past ten or more years, conversations between opposing teams in the lead-up to or during a home Test series in India have been more or less consistent. One is unquestionably the pitch, while the other is in jeopardy due to the presence of India’s spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Of course, Virat Kohli is also present, but no matter the circumstances, he consistently dominates every series across all formats.

“His record in India as an opening batsman is stunning”- Ravi Shastri
Rohit did “set the tone” when Australia was dismissed for just 177 runs on Day 1 as Shastri properly noted in his chat on The ICC Review. At the end of the first day, he scored a smooth 56* runs to cut the lead to 100 runs, and on the second morning, despite a middle-order collapse, he held down the fort at one end. India scored 400 runs in the first innings, including a century from Rohit, who eventually reached his first century as Test captain.
“His record in India as an opening batsman is stunning, He will dictate terms very early on. I mentioned Ashwin, there’ll be a lot of talk of Kohli, and there’ll be a lot of talk of Pujara. But I think Rohit is at the top, if he can set the tone, that’ll comfort the dressing room big time. But his form can dictate terms in the series, not just because of the runs he’ll get, but the pace at which he gets it” Ravi Shastri told The ICC Review.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2023 is critical for India in terms of the World Test Championship (WTC) final. To qualify for the final, the Rohit Sharma-led side must win at least three Tests in the series.
