Australia named two off-spinners, Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy, to the playing XI for the first Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2023. After the humiliating defeat in the series opener, former Australian captain Michael Clarke believes that selectors made a mistake by picking two off-spinners, which was not the right decision in terms of team balance.

Young spinner Todd Murphy made his debut in the first Test against India at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. The off-spinner seized the opportunity with both hands and took his maiden five-wicket haul, becoming the youngest Australian player to achieve the milestone on his Test debut. The 22-year-old was the visitors’ best bowler in their only innings, taking 7 for 124.

Kuhnemann Is A Pretty Good Bowler – Michael Clarke

The left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been added to the Australia squad for the second Test. Michael Clarke said the selectors can’t afford to drop off-spinner Murphy now or veteran spinner Nathan Lyon.

“I’ve watched a little bit of him (Kuhnemann) bowl in domestic cricket. He’s a pretty good bowler, and he would be hard work and he offers a bit of variety. But that means you’ve got to either play three spinners — I’m not sure they’re going to do that — or you’ve got to leave out Nathan Lyon. I’m pretty sure they’re not going to do that,” Clark said on Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast. “

“Todd Murphy obviously did really well, so you can’t leave him out. Our spinners did a good job, but I don’t know if two offies is the right balance for us as well. But as Stuey just said, how do you drop one of them? You can’t.”

Australia were bowled out for 177 and 91 runs in their two innings, respectively. The visitors suffered a humiliating loss by a huge margin of innings and 132 runs in the series opener. The Aussies will take on India in a must-win second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on February 17, Friday.
