Cricket experts have advised Jasprit Bumrah to remodel his bowling action, as he has a short run-up and all the speed in his bowling comes from his follow-through, which puts a lot of stress on his back. However, former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar feels that Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah does not need to change his bowling action after returning from injury.

Jasprit Bumrah played his last T20I match at home against Australia and was sidelined for five months due to recurring back problems. The right-arm pacer was included in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka earlier this year but was ruled out ahead of the first match after complaining of a stiff back. He was not selected for the Test and ODI series against Australia at home.

Speaking to Sports Tak, Shoaib Akhtar gave a surprising statement on Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling action and said that the Indian pacer should stick to his original action, which gave him success. Akhtar has spoken about why the back injury has troubled Bumrah, noting that his bowling action will not be sustainable if he plays every game.

“Bumrah can’t change his action now because that’s what has given him success. He is a very courageous fast bowler and I like the aggression that he has in his bowling. I wish he recovered quickly and makes a strong comeback,” Shoaib Akhtar said.

“When Jasprit Bumrah loads up, that puts pressure on his spinal cord. He pivots with his back, while we are more side-on and can use our thighs or even arms. But he doesn’t have that leverage. His action is just not sustainable if he plays every game,” he added.

Jasprit Bumrah Has To Pick And Choose Which Formats He Had To Play – Shoaib Akhtar

Shoaib Akhtar believes that Jasprit Bumrah should decide which formats to play, as he cannot play every game. The former Pakistan pacer suggests that Bumrah should play only crucial games and spend more time exercising, which would help his back muscles and spine get more flexible.

“Bumrah could have been managed better and he could have himself realized that he has to pick and choose which formats he had to play. If I was a part of the management, I would tell Bumrah that he would play just 3 out of every 5 ODIs and then I would put him into the pool for swimming.”

“I would make him do 500 laps as swimming would help his back get more flexible. More time in the pool, in the gym and stretching with weights would help his back muscles and spine get more flexible.”

The 29-year-old is set to miss the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the World Test Championship (WTC) final, which is scheduled to be played at the Oval on June 7. The India team management would like to manage his workload to keep him fresh for the ODI World Cup 2023 at home.
