The next coming weeks are going to big challenge for the Australian side as they look for a record-series win against India in red-ball cricket away from home. The team has a solid line-up that can give India a run for its money and a lot of things will depend on how prepared Australia are before the start of the all-important Border Gavaskar Series.

The visiting side refrained from participating in any practice game before the start of the actual series as top-order batter Steve Smith believed it would be a waste of time to play on green tops in practice games when India would test them with spinning tracks in the series.

Former South African cricketer and legend, Jonty Rhodes agreed with Australia’s decision to take a rain check on the practice games as he believes that the visitors have taken a smart approach in the scenario.

“I’ve seen the practice pitches in India and it has a lot of footmarks. The main pitch is used for training purposes. These days all the teams play a lot of cricket and turning tracks are not limited to India. It is important how much time you spend there and how much you prepare, this helps you adapt to the conditions,”

“I understand what (Steve) Smith wanted to say. He knows the practice pitches will be greener and the match will be played on the training pitch and Australia took a very smart decision.”

It will be interesting to see if Australia’s decision turns out in their favor with the side slated to clash against India in the 1st Test match of the four-match series starting 9th February at Nagpur.

Australia will be coming into the series brimmed with momentum behind their backs after winning two consecutive Test series against West Indies and South Africa at home. India, on the other hand, have also done well as the side have clinched both their last two series against Bangladesh and New Zealand.

A win in the first game for any of the two sides will set the momentum for the entire series and as such both India and Australia will be eager to grab the early lead in the series.
