The 26-year-old Australia National Cricket Team left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has opened up on his call-up to the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 against India, saying that he was “pretty shocked” to get the news of his addition to the Aussie squad.
Kuhnemann was included in the Australian squad as the 29-year-old leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson made his pre-planned return to Brisbane for the birth of his first child. Swepson travelled back home to be with his pregnant fiancée, Jess. However, the leg-spinner will re-join the squad ahead of the third Test match.

In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Matthew Kuhnemann said that although he was shocked to get a call-up for the India Test series, he was feeling pretty amazing.
“I got a phone call yesterday morning (11 February) when we were walking out for the warm-up, to my surprise. I was pretty shocked and I was probably a little bit nowhere in the first session yesterday,” Kuhnemann said on the sidelines of the Sheffield Shield in an interview with ESPNcricinfo.

Matthew Kuhnemann further revealed that he closely followed the first Test between India and Australia and watched all three days. He also lauded off-spinner Todd Murphy for his exceptional performance. Notably, the 22-year-old debutant looked impressive with the ball in the series opener and he finished his spell with the figures of 47-12-124-7.
“I’ve watched every day (of the first Test), I’ve just been such a fan of these series, they’re so good to watch. Todd Murphy was exceptional, and I watched how Jadeja bowled. I’m just really excited to be to get over there and be with the boys,” the spinner said.
The first Test between Pat Cummins & Co. and Rohit Sharma-led side got finished within three days. India crushed the visitors and won by an innings and 132 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Meanwhile, the second Test will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi from February 17 to 21.
Also, Matthew Kuhnemann is in contention to play the second Test and he could partner with Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy to be the third spinner.
