The young wicketkeeper-batsman, Ishan Kishan struggled in the recently concluded T20 series against New Zealand. Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan said the team management should pick Prithvi Shaw ahead of the left-handed batter and give him a long run.

There have been questions raised over Kishan’s place in the line-up as he scored 24 runs in three innings with a dismal average of 8 and a strike rate of 60. He has not scored a half-century in the shorter format in his last 14 innings, and his last half-century was against South Africa in June last year.

I Definitely Believe So – Irfan Pathan

During a discussion on the Star Sports show ‘Match Point’, Irfan Pathan said that Prithvi Shaw should be given the entire series and the Men in Blue XI should have to pick another wicketkeeper instead of Kishan.

“Going forward, I definitely believe so. Even in the last game when the series decider was there, a lot of people were asking for Prithvi Shaw to be played. That’s when I said that if you are playing Prithvi Shaw, you need to give him a long run,” Irfan Pathan said.

“What is long run? Give him a full series. You can’t give him just one match, especially a series decider. The only thing they will have to keep in mind is that Ishan Kishan was playing not only as an opening batter, he was playing as a wicketkeeper-batter as well,” he added.

Prithvi Shaw was recalled to the Indian team after performing well in domestic cricket but did not get a chance to play against New Zealand. He played only one T20I for the national team, in which he was dismissed for a golden duck.

The Team Combination Might Change – Irfan Pathan

Pathan said that the opening pair of Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw is ideal and should open the innings for Team India in T20Is.

“The team combination might change a bit when Prithvi Shaw plays and Ishan Kishan goes out but I think whenever Prithvi Shaw gets a chance, it will be a fantastic one because on one side you will get a stable opener, who is Shubman Gill.”

“Then you will get a blockbuster batter in Prithvi Shaw whose strike rate is pretty high. He goes from the word go. So I am really excited for Prithvi to get a long run. I hope he will get it in the future.”
