Due to a hamstring injury, Kane Richardson will miss Australia’s limited-overs tour of Pakistan and will be replaced by New South Wales left-armer Ben Dwarshuis.
Richardson, the most experienced fast bowler in an already depleted squad, sustained the injury while training in Melbourne, just before the team departs for Lahore.
“Despite the small injury, it was determined that Richardson’s best interests were served by staying at home due to the long flight to Pakistan, four games in eight days, and tight turnarounds,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.
Dwarshuis, who also plays for Sydney Sixers, has no international experience, but he was a member of Australia’s T20 squad during a tri-series in 2017-18 and has participated in the IPL. If he makes the ODI squad during the three-match series, it will be his first ODI appearance following only nine List A games for New South Wales.
With Richardson out, the speed attack will be led by Jason Behrendorff and Sean Abbott, who will be joined by Nathan Ellis and allrounders Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green, and Marcus Stoinis.
Australia’s pace attack has turned inexperienced after Kane Richardson was ruled out:
After Kane Richardson was pulled out of Australia’s limited-overs tour of Pakistan due to a hamstring injury, they will have one of their most inexperienced pace assaults in more than 50 years of one-day international cricket.
After Richardson’s injury at training on Monday in Melbourne, left-armer Ben Dwarshuis has been called up for the three-ODI (and one T20I) series in Lahore. Richardson’s injury has robbed an already inexperienced fast-bowling group of its most experienced member.
On the other hand, Captain Aaron Finch is sure that he has the bowling livestock for what will be Australia’s second ODI series in the last 15 months.
On Tuesday, before they depart for Pakistan, Finch remarked of his fast-bowling squad, “One thing that will help is the boys having played a lot of T20 cricket.”
“They’re inexperienced for Australia, but I believe that playing T20 cricket would improve them.” There’s a lot of talent in the group and individuals who have played domestic one-day cricket for a long time.
A trio of tests Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins are all returning home after the tour’s last Test on Friday, and despite Richardson’s hamstring niggle being slight, the Australians decided it wasn’t worth putting him on the aircraft for a series of four games in eight days.
