Chappell–Hadlee Trophy Records & Stats

The Ranji Trophy is one of the oldest cricket tournaments in the world. India's premier first-class tournament, it was founded by the BCCI in 1934. While it was first called the 'Cricket Championship of India', it was renamed to Ranji Trophy in 1935. The first season of the tournament was played in the season 1934/35.

At present, 38 teams participate in the Ranji Trophy. The 28 states, four of the eight union territories, four regional associations (Mumbai, Vidarbha, Saurashtra, Baroda) and two pan-India associations (Railways, Services) participate in the competition.

Mumbai are the most decorated team in the history of the Ranji Trophy. They have won the tournament 42 times including 15 times in a row from 1958–59 to 1972–73. Karnataka have second-most Ranji Trophy titles. They have won the competition eight times.

Since its inception, the tournament has been played in every season except the 2020-21 season when the BCCI was forced to suspended it due to Covid-19 pandemic. With the tournament now almost 100 years old, it captures the attention of the cricket fans from around the world.
