Australian cricket is all set to face another tense phase, as contract tensions between the national top players and Cricket Australia (CA) are now starting to turn serious. At least five senior Australia cricketers are reportedly not happy with the initial contract offers for the 2026-27 season.

They have not signed the Cricket Australia (CA) deals yet. At the same time, frustration is also growing among several big names from the Big Bash League. Many BBL stars are now seriously thinking about playing in overseas leagues instead of staying in Australia.

The main reason behind this anger is the long-standing pay gap with foreign leagues and the delay in fixing new payment structures after the BBL privatization plan slowed down.

Top Australian players unhappy with Cricket Australia contract offers

As reported by ESPNCricinfo, Australia’s top five players are not happy with the first set of contracts recently offered by Cricket Australia (CA). Some players feel the structure does not fully match the reality of modern cricket, where franchise leagues are now paying huge amounts.

Under the current agreement between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA), which will continue till mid-2028, selectors can give national contracts to a maximum of 24 players for the 2026-27 season.

These contracted players will together share around A$21.9 million as their basic yearly salary between July 2026 and June 2027.

How CA's current contract system works

Players are given contracts according to their importance in the team and how many matches they are expected to play during the season. Even the lowest-ranked contracted player earns a base salary of around A$360,645.

Apart from this fixed amount, players also get extra match fees — around A$19,000 for every Test match, nearly A$8,000 for each ODI, and close to A$5,000 for every T20I they play.

They also receive bonus money when Australia wins matches, with a Test victory giving each player around A$30,000 in total. Additionally, contracted players can also earn extra money through Cricket Australia’s marketing deals and sponsor activities.

Players are attracted to franchise leagues

But even with all this, some cricketers are not satisfied with the offers, as they can earn more while playing in global franchise leagues. The leagues are offering massive contracts around the world, and Australian players are very aware of it. It is becoming harder to ignore those opportunities for Australian players, especially the white-ball superstars.

There is also another concern. With franchise leagues offering huge money, many players feel a 12-month Cricket Australia contract could actually reduce their yearly earnings. They want to be free to play in overseas leagues without needing permission and earn more money globally while still playing for Australia with an annual contract.

Top BBL players discuss future amid salary dispute

Meanwhile, the report shared that around 12 top Australian BBL players are furious after the BBL privatization plans got delayed. The players had even created a WhatsApp group last year to discuss their future because they were frustrated with the salary gap between local and overseas players for the last three years in the Big Bash League.

CA was planning fresh salary talks with the ACA during the privatization process, but the plan was delayed after two states refused to move ahead. A new hybrid model is now being prepared, but everything is put on hold. Now, many BBL stars are exploring overseas options, especially with the ILT20 league starting before the BBL this year. Some Australian players have already received offers close to A$500,000 to play in the UAE.

Even though the players do not expect such huge money in the BBL immediately, they were hoping the salary gap would reduce this year before bigger changes arrive in 2027-28. CA had also proposed increasing the BBL salary cap by up to A$1.5 million.
