ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is the biggest focus for all cricket teams this year. The T20 World Cup 2024 will take place in June 2024 in the West Indies and United States. India has also started preparations for the tournament with their ongoing T20I series against Afghanistan.

India is scheduled to play just 3 T20I games ahead of T20 World Cup 2024. Indian players will be busy with the England Test series from January to March 2024. Later, they will participate in IPL 2024 till May 2024. Hence, IPL 2024 will play a key role in finalizing the squad for T20 World Cup 2024.

Some players might get the opportunity in the World Cup squad after a good show IPL. However, some players might resign from the shortest format if they are not picked for ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Below are 5 Indian players who can retire from the T20s if not picked for the T20 World Cup 2024.

5 Indian Players Who Can Retire From T20s If Not Picked For T20 World Cup 2024

5. Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin is the first player on this list. Ashwin was part of the previous T20 World Cup in 2022. He also played all the matches during the tournament. However, after India’s semi-final loss against England, the right-arm spinner never played T20Is for India.

Notably, Ashwin’s selection over Yuzvendra Chahal in the playing 11 also invited a lot of criticism. For the last two years, Ashwin has been a regular member of Tests and also played some ODIs. However, he has vanished from T20Is. If Aswhin is not picked for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, he might pull the curtains down on his T20I career.

4. Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik is another player on this list. Karthik made it to the T20I World Cup squad in 2022 after his sensational show in IPL that year. However, he failed to come up with good knocks during the ICC event. Later, he was dropped from the T20I team.

Among wicketkeepers, players like Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, and Jitesh Sharma have earned the limelight in the shortest format. Karthik has already crossed 38 years of age. He made a T20I comeback in the last World Cup but it did not emerge fruitful.

Hence, it is almost impossible that Dinesh Karthik will be back on the Indian team once again. If the right-handed batter is not picked for the T20 World Cup 2024, it will be a great time for him to retire from the format.

3. Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Another player whose career was hammered down by selectors after the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 was Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The right-arm pacer was an integral part of the white-ball formats till 2022. However, since the start of 2023, selectors neglected him from the shortest format.

Young pacers like Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar, and Mohammed Siraj have done a superb job in the shortest format for the last few years. Hence, there is no chance that Bhuvi will be back on the T20I side after missing action for more than a year.

2. Harshal Patel

Many fans might not remember the fact that Harshal Patel was also part of the Indian team that played in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup. Patel emerged in the limelight after IPL 2021 when he won the purple cap with the most wickets. He also became a regular pacer in the T20I team.

However, since he emerged as too costly in the shortest format in some games, selectors overlooked him from the T20I team. The right-arm seamer last played a T20I match against Sri Lanka in January 2023.

Other pacers have cemented their places in the T20I team. Patel, who has also crossed 33 years, will find it hard to get a spot in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Hence, he may retire from T20s if not picked for the ICC event.

1. Umesh Yadav

Umesh Yadav played his last T20I match in October 2022 against South Africa. The right-arm pacer also played in the ICC World Test Championship final in 2023, where India lost to Australia. However, after India’s loss, Umesh Yadav never got the opportunity to wear the Indian jersey once again.

Although Yadav has not played for Team India for quite some time, he hasn’t put an end to his international career. Yadav might wait to make a comeback in Tests in the future. However, his T20I return is almost impossible due to his growing age.

Yadav has crossed 36 years and it is almost unlikely that selectors will turn towards him for T20Is once again. Hence, Umesh Yadav can also retire from T20Is if not picked for T20 World Cup 2024 squad.
