Rohit Sharma might have captained India only for a brief period in test cricket, but there were certain players who made a name for themselves during his tenure. In this article, we will look at five such players.
5 Indian Players Whose Careers Flourished Under Rohit Sharma's Captaincy
1. Yashasvi Jaiswal
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his international debut against the West Indies in July 2023, grabbed the opportunity with both hands and scored a magnificent hundred.
Hailing from the same city, Rohit played a major role in backing Yashasvi and made sure he is ready as and when the time comes, having impressed everyone during the 2020 Under-19 World Cup.
Yashasvi hasn't looked back since then and has played a number of match-winning innings for Team India in his young test career, and has also featured in one ODI against England earlier this year.
2. Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep has had a peculiar career so far. Having burst onto the scene in the 2014 Under-19 World Cup, he was picked up by KKR in the same year and made his international debut during the 2017 test series against Australia.
Kuldeep picked up four wickets on his debut and played his first ODI against the West Indies that very year. Future was looking bright for the chinaman as he performed consistently.
But things took a sharp turn in 2019 as he was in and out of the team and suffered multiple injury setbacks as well, until Rohit took over as the captain in 2022.
Rohit Sharma played a crucial role in easing Kuldeep back into the setup, and the latter responded with match-winning performances and has now become an integral part of the team.
3. Sarfaraz Khan
The Mumbai batter had to wait for a long time despite scoring truckloads of runs in domestic cricket to earn his maiden international call-up, and it was under Rohit Sharma's captaincy that Sarfaraz's hard work finally paid off.
Sarfaraz repaid the faith shown in him by the selectors and the captain by scoring a half-century in Rajkot
Sarfaraz also made a name for himself as a fielder who has great reflexes and can make difficult catches look easy while fielding at short leg.
4. KL Rahul
Like Kuldeep, KL Rahul has also witnessed a lot of ups and downs, especially in test cricket, with him getting dropped in 2019 and making a comeback in 2021, to battling multiple injury setbacks in 2022.
It can be said that Rahul got a new lease of life as a test cricketer during India's tour of South Africa in 2023 under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, where he was asked to keep wicket and bat in the middle order.
Rahul responded with a hard-fought century in the Boxing Day test as wickets kept falling from the other end. He batted intelligently with the tail and guided the team to a challenging total.
5. Devdutt Padikkal
The left-handed batter from Karnartka was in the reckoning for a couple of years before making his test debut in 2024 against England in Dharamsala with Rohit Sharma at the helm.
Devdutt Padikkal made full use of the opportunity by scoring a half-century at a crucial point in the game and helped the team clinch a memorable win.
Padikkal has since then become a vital part of the squad and was a part of the team that toured Australia last year.
