Aakash Chopra Feels Ravichandran Ashwin is Unlikely To Surpass Anil Kumble's Tally Of 619 Test Wickets

Cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra feels that Ravichandran Ashwin is unlikely to break Anil Kumble’s record of 619 wickets in Tests. Aakash Chopra feels that Ashwin will not get so many opportunities to reach so many wickets in the longest format.

Ravichandran Ashwin recently became the 2nd most wicket-taker for India in Tests, surpassing Kapil Dev with 434 wickets. The right-arm spinner accounts for 436 wickets in 85 Tests now. For India, Anil Kumble accounts for most Test wickets with 619 scalps.

Not 100% Certain That It’s Possible: Aakash Chopra On Ravichandran Ashwin Surpassing Anil Kumble In Test Wickets

During a discussion on his Youtube channel, Aakash Chopra was asked whether Ravichandran Ashwin can surpass Anil Kumble’s tally of 619 Test wickets. He said in his opinion, it will be difficult and not happen.

“In my opinion, it will be difficult, it will not happen. I am not 100% certain that it is possible because we do not play too much Test cricket. In whatever we play, we need to play three series away and three at home if we talk about the two-year cycle.

“He is not going to get 25 wickets or so in the series away from home, he will get very limited wickets. How many chances he will get to play, I am not a 100% certain either,” Aakash Chopra said.

Aakash Chopra also said that Ravichandran Ashwin will not get a lot of opportunities on foreign soil. Notably, Ashwin was benched for all 4 Tests during India’s tour of England last year.

“When you go to England now, you will see Jaddu playing ahead of him. So he will not play there at all. When he will not play, how will he pick up wickets? There is no guarantee in India as well because there are a lot of two-Test series also, then how will he get so many wickets?

“He still needs 180-odd wickets from here, it is not going to be easy, that’s what I feel. You get 50 to 60 wickets in a year, if he has three to four very good years, there is an outside chance it might happen. But we really don’t know,” Chopra further said.

Ravichandran Ashwin picked 6 wickets in India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test in Mohali. After taking the wicket of Charith Asalanka in the 2nd innings, he surpassed Kapil Dev to become the 2nd highest wicket-taker for India.

India crushed Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs in the 1st Test in Mohali. India posted 574-8 (d) in the 1st innings. Later, they bowled out Sri Lanka for 174 and 178 in both innings to win the match comfortably. Ravindra Jadeja was awarded player of the match for smashing 175 and picking 9 wickets in the match.
