Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has picked four players who he feels could be retained by Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. According to recent reports, each team will be allowed a maximum of four player-retentions for the mega auction of next year’s IPL.

In that case, the 5-time champions – so far – will have a huge dilemma on which players to retain and whic to let go.

First up, Aakash Chopra is absolutely certain that the MI’s first three picks will be captain Rohit Sharma, spearhead bowler Jasprit Bumrah and superstar all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

These were the same three players which Mumbai had retained ahead of the IPL 2018 mega auction, however, Aakash Chopra wonders what would their price distribution be this time – Rohit had a salary cap of Rs 15 crore, Hardik Rs 11 crore, and Bumrah Rs 7 crore.

“The Mumbai Indians are the first team that comes to mind. Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya – you will hundred percent want to retain these three players,” Aakash Chopra said in his YouTube video.

“Among these Rohit will be the first retention, but the second and third, will Hardik or Bumrah be happy with just seven crores? That’s a bit of an issue.”

Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Krunal Pandya, and Rahul Chahar are all India players now and have played significant roles part in Mumbai Indians’ last couple of title wins, so have overseas players in Quinton de Kock and Trent Boult.

However, as Aakash Chopra feels, and seems to be the general consensus among fans, Mumbai’s fourth retention is likely to be Kieron Pollard. The West Indian all-rounder has been with the franchise since 2010 – he was roped back with the Right To Match card in the previous mega auction. Pollard has been a regular feature in MI’s line-up for a decade and has stepped up whenever the team needed his services, especially in important games.

“I feel they will retain Pollard at the start. So that will be their four retentions,” he further stated.

Meanwhile, Mumbai are on the fourth position on the IPL 2021 points table with 4 wins and 3 losses. The tournament will resume in September in the UAE.
