Aakash Chopra in his latest YouTube video has tried explaining whether the BCCI is really benefiting from the Impact Player rule. The rule was introduced in the IPL last year after a brief experiment in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament before the IPL.

In the latest meeting between the IPL owners and the BCCI, Delhi Capitals owner Parth Jindal strongly opposed the rule in play as he thought it limited the role of the Indian all-rounders especially in the tournament. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma also shared his view on this new innovation during the tournament itself. He too was against it as he thought it was not allowing the Indian all-rounders to play to the best of their potential.

Speaking about the rule in his latest YouTube video, Aakash Chopra said that for the top-notch all-rounders like Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel nothing has changed with their game and their approach with the Impact Player Rule coming in.

He said that the above-mentioned players play with the same intensity and approach and their role remains the same despite the rule coming in. All these players are regular players in the XI as well.

However, he spoke about the positive aspect of the rule saying that it eliminates mediocre all-rounder.

In the video, he also touched upon an important point regarding the Impact Player rule which is who is gaining out of this. Is it the BCCI or Indian cricket?

"If the BCCI or the governing council would have allowed Impact player rule for both overseas and Indian cricketers, the standards of the IPL would have definitely improved, let's be honest about it. In that case, five overseas players would have played instead of four. A lot of players who are sitting out would have got a chance to play. But they said no and allowed only four overseas players," said Chopra.

"The rule is limited only to Indian players. More often than not it is an uncapped Indian player who is summoned as the Impact Player, who is not able to make the cut in the first XI as a batsman or a bowler," Chopra further said.

He further said that with the introduction of the Impact player rule now 10 Indians are ideally getting a chance to play in the XI which overall amounts to 80 players across 10 teams.

"There are 10 teams with seven India's amounting to 70 players. With the eighth Indian player used as an Impact player now, it results in 80 Indian players. 10 more uncapped Indians are getting an opportunity. Is this right or wrong, this is the entire debate about," Chopra stressed.

Impact Player Rule Should Stay: Aakash Chopra

He concluded by saying that there are points in favor of the rule as well as points against the rule as well. He said that he wants the rule to stay.

"The Impact player rule should stay. On who is a better all-rounder will make the cut. If you are not a good all-rounder so be it," Chopra concluded saying.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has said that they will evaluate all the points kept in the meeting and come out with a decision by the end of August 2024.
