As the Australian white-ball captain suggested that opening partner David Warner take over as leader of the 50-over team, Aaron Finch’s withdrawal from one-day international cricket is certain to generate some controversy.

After his 146th match, the third ODI against New Zealand in a dead rubber match in Cairns on Sunday, Finch made the announcement this morning that he was calling it quits on his 50-over international career.

He will still serve as the T20 captain, though, and will guide the country in front of the domestic T20 World Cup later this year.

But Finch threw a wrench in the works by ostensibly backing Warner as his replacement while speaking to Triple M’s Deadset Legends on Saturday morning after announcing his resignation from the position.

In addition to having a lifetime captaincy ban imposed by Cricket Australia following the 2018 ball-tampering fiasco in Cape Town, Warner is 21 days older than Finch.

Warner would be a great option for Australia: Aaron Finch

When asked whether Warner would be a fine captain for Australia, Aaron Finch responded that Warner would.

Aaron Finch added, “I think CA are reconsidering what that looks like. “I have had a couple of opportunities to play under him for Australia when he is given the chance to captain, and he is been amazing.”

“He is a brilliant tactical captain, and everyone at the moment enjoyed playing for him. However, I am unsure of CA’s stance on the matter.”

“Do I want it to be overturned? Absolutely. For Australian cricket, what he can provide in terms of leadership, as well as his ability to mentor and assist the upcoming players in the future, will be of utmost importance.”

Warner is not the only player who may lead the squad in the 50-over format; other candidates include Smith, wicketkeeper Alex Carey, and Pat Cummins. Glenn Maxwell has previously led his Melbourne Stars BBL club as captain.
