The national senior selection committee’s fifth selector position, which has been open since February, will shortly be filled as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issues a call for candidates.

Abey Kuruvilla, a former fast bowler for India, had served on the board’s cricket committees for a total of five years until his stint on those committees came to an end at the beginning of the year.

BCCI To Have Abey Kuruvilla’s Replacement Soon

“We will have (Abey) Kuruvilla’s replacement soon; probably in the next two weeks, we will have a new selector in place,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express.

No member of any cricket committee may serve for more than five years, according to the BCCI’s new constitution. Previously, Abey Kuruvilla presided over the junior selection committee for four years. He is presently the general manager of the BCCI (game development).

Chairman Chetan Sharma, Sunil Joshi, Harvinder Singh, and Debashish Mohanty are the other four senior selectors. Starting with the home series against Sri Lanka in February and March, they have chosen the Indian team without a fifth teammate. This was followed by the tours of Ireland and England, as well as the impending West Indies trip.

A member has also been absent from the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which will choose the fifth selector, since October of last year. Before Madan Lal, the committee’s head resigned after reaching the age of 70, the CAC originally consisted of three people.

The new constitution prohibits anybody above the age of 70 from holding any office within the board. Rahul Dravid’s nomination as India’s head coach was made by the two-member CAC, which is made up of Sulakshana Naik and RP Singh; the BCCI has not yet found a successor for Lal.

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has reportedly maintained Bangladesh on standby to host the Asia Cup, which is slated to take place in August, despite the current conflict in Sri Lanka. Although Sri Lanka Cricket has indicated a desire to host the event, the ACC will make the ultimate choice later this month.

Both the Indian women’s team and the Australian men’s team have just returned on month-long tours in Sri Lanka. If the situation worsens further, the ACC does not want to take any chances.
