The India National Cricket Team's explosive opening batsman Abhishek Sharma has dropped a massive statement on the poor form of T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and vice-captain Shubman Gill.
Abhishek Sharma stated that, although Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill are currently going through a rough patch, they will likely win matches for India in the T20 World Cup 2026.
I know when and where he can win games for us irrespective of the conditions - Abhishek Sharma on Shubman Gill
The form of the team leaders, Suryakumar and Shubman, has emerged as one of the biggest concerns for India ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
In 2025, Suryakumar Yadav scored just 213 runs in 18 matches with the best score of 47* and at an average of 14.20 and a strike rate of 125.29. On the other hand, Shubman Gill has scored 291 runs in 15 T20I matches at an average of 24.25 and a strike rate of 137.26 in 2025.
Speaking at a press conference after the third T20I against South Africa, Abhishek backed the struggling batters, saying:
"I'll tell you one thing straightaway. These two guys are going to win matches for us in the World Cup and in the series before that as well.
"I have been playing with them since long, especially with Shubman. I know when and where he can win games for us irrespective of the conditions. I have always had faith in him. I hope that everyone can see that soon."
There was assistance for the pacers - Abhishek Sharma
India won the third T20I against South Africa in Dharamsala by 7 wickets with 25 balls remaining, and as usual, Abhishek Sharma was India's best batter on the night as he hammered 35 runs off 18 balls.
During the same interaction with the media, Abhishek revealed that he wanted to take the game away from the opposition in the powerplay itself. He said:
"There was assistance for the pacers. The way I way batting, I knew that if I get the team off to a good start, the game could be over in the powerplay. So, that was the plan and the others played normally and decided to remain not out. I always try to give the team starts. If I have that intent, the other batters can just play along the ground or probably take their time," Abhishek Sharma stated.
Everything took us by surprise - Aiden Markram
Meanwhile, the Proteas skipper, Aiden Markram, was left surprised with the way the match panned out as he expected it to be a high-scoring contest instead of a low-scoring clash.
“Everything took us by surprise. It looked like a good batting wicket. The Indian team felt the same, as did Ravi Shastri (at the toss). We did not expect it to do that much. It was challenging, but you have to have a plan to try and get a competitive score. Ultimately, we were 20-30 runs short,” Markram said.
