Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja was fined INR 5,000 for dumping garbage in a Goa village which neighbors the village in which he owns a bungalow. He owns a picturesque property in Aldona village in North Goa, which is home to various celebrities including writer Amitav Ghosh.

Ajay Jadeja was once one of the most celebrated ODI cricketers in the world, though his Test career didn’t reach the heights to which his 50-over career did. He played domestic cricket for Haryana and made his India Test debut in 1992 against South Africa in Durban and his ODI debut against Sri Lanka the same year in the 1992 World Cup.

He played 15 Tests, making 576 runs with a best of 96, and in 196 ODIs, he made 5359 runs with a best of 119, with 6 centuries and 30 half-centuries, and was one of the best finishers India had prior to the T20 boom. He also picked 20 ODI wickets with his handy medium pace with a best of 3/3. His most memorable knock is 45 runs against Pakistan in the quarterfinal of the 1996 World Cup in Bangalore, during which he had smashed 22 runs in one over from Waqar Younis.

“We are plagued by the garbage issue in our village. The garbage from outside is also dumped in the village, so we appointed some youth to collect the garbage bags and scan them for any proof to identify the culprits,” the sarpanch said.

The sarpanch also mentioned that Ajay Jadeja paid the fine without an issue.

“We found a bill in the name of Ajay Jadeja in some bags of garbage. When we informed him not to dump the garbage in the village in the future, he said he was willing to pay the fine. So he paid it. We are proud that such a celebrity, a popular cricket player, stays in our village, but such people should follow the garbage norms,” Bandodkar said.
