While MS Dhoni is often admired as one of the best wicketkeepers in international cricket, Alex Carey has done something that would even surprise MS Dhoni fans. Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey has grabbed an insane record as a wicketkeeper in the ongoing Marsh Cup 2024.

Playing for South Australia, Alex Carey grabbed a total of 8 catches during the encounter against Queensland. Five of Carey’s catches came off pacer Jordan Buckingham. The right-arm pacer hunted 6 wickets for 41 runs during his 10-over spell in the match at an economy of 4.10.

Batters who became a victim of Alex Carey behind the stumps were Ben McDermott, Matt Renshaw, Marnus Labuschagne, Jack Clayton, Jack Wildermuth, Dylan Mclachlan, Gurinder Sandhu, and Matthew Kuhnemann.

Alex Carey equals Peter Nevill’s record in Domestic Cricket

Alex Carey has equaled Peter Nevill’s record as the wicketkeeper. The former Australia wicketkeeper Nevill got 8 dismissals while representing New South Wales in an encounter against Cricket Australia XI. However, he got two wickets through stumpings.

In English domestic cricket, Derek Taylor was the first player to grab eight catches. The Somerset wicketkeeper grabbed the feat in 1982. Later, James Pipe also grabbed the same triumph while playing for Worcestershire in 2001.

Notably, Alex Carey played his first match in the Marsh Cup 2023-24 against Queensland. He was part of the Australia squad during the recent home series against West Indies. He played in both Tests against West Indies and mustered 82 runs across 3 innings with one half-century. He was not part of the ODI and T20I series.

Meanwhile, South Australia also crushed Queensland by 5 wickets in the match. Batting first, Queensland could only add 218-10 in 1st innings. Jordan Buckingham’s bowling and Carey’s wicketkeeping troubled their batters.

Labuschagne was the top run-getter with 74 runs. Dylan Mclachlan also scored a crucial 44 runs. Matthew Kunheman added 36 runs towards the end. Carey could not excel with the bat as the opening batter got out cheaply for 12 runs.

However, South Australia skipper Nathan McSweeney shattered a half-century while Thomas Kelly added 81 runs to drive the team to victory by 5 wickets. South Australia chased down the target in 44.1 overs. Jordan Buckingham was awarded player of the match for jolting 6 wickets in the match.

Meanwhile, South Australia could not reach the final of the Marsh Cup 2023-24 even after a victory in their last match. New South Wales and Western Australia are two teams that will lock horns in the final. The encounter takes place on Sunday, February 25.

South Australia finished in the last 6th spot in the Marsh Cup 2023-24 points table. They won just 1 game and lost 5 out of 7. Their one match ended with no result. However, they finished the tournament on a winning note with Alex Carey and Jordan Buckingham achieving impressive performances in the game.
