Former IPL champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have been one of the most consistent teams in the tournament. In this article, we will look at all the IPL Captains of SRH.
All IPL Captains of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)
Adam Gilchrist (2008-2010)
Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist was appointed the skipper of the Deccan Chargers and made a strong comeback by winning the second season after a disappointing performance in the inaugural edition.
Gilchrist led Deccan in 42 matches and won 18 of those majority of which came in the 2009 edition held in South Africa.
VVS Laxman (2008)
Legendary Indian batter VVS Laxman also led Deccan Chargers in six matches during the 2008 season, but wasn't able to guide the team to a win in five of those games and ended up winning just one game.
Kumar Sangakkara (2011-2013)
The Chargers roped in former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara as the captain of the team in 2011. Sangakara led Deccan for two years and was also the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad in their first season in 2013.
Sangakkara led Deccan in 25 games and succeeded in winning 8 while losing 17 of those. The wicketkeeper also led SRH in nine games in their inaugural season and hada 50% win record.
Cameron White (2011-2013)
The Australian batter Cameron White was at the helm of affairs for DC and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 12 gams and won seven games, five of which came during his time as the captain of SRH.
Shikhar Dhawan (2013-2014)
Shikhar Dhawan, who captained Sunrisers Hyderabad for the first time in 2013, was appointed as the full-time captain of the team in 2014 before being replaced by Sammy in the middle of the tournament.
Dhawan won seven and lost nine games in his sixteen-match stint as the captain of SRH.
Deren Sammy (2014)
Daren Sammy, who took over from Dhawan as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014, led the side in four matches and was able to win two of those games.
David Warner (2015-2021)
David Warner, who was picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014, was appointed the captain of the team in 2015 and did a good job as a captain by guiding the side to the playoffs in every season till 2020.
It was under Warner's captaincy that Sunrisers Hyderabad won their maiden IPL title in 2016 after defeating RCB in a close contest in the final. Warner led SRH in 67 matches and had a win percentage of 52.23.
Kane Williamson (2018-2022)
Kane Williamson, who was first given the captaincy in the absence of David Warner in 2018, did an excellent job both with the bat and in the field and guided the team into the final of that particular edition.
However, Williamson was not able to replicate the same performance in 2022 as SRH failed to qualify for the playoffs for the second year in a row.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2019-2023)
Bhuvneshwar Kumar had a brief stint as Hyderabad's captain on a few occasions between 2019 and 2023. The fast bowler led Sunrisers Hyderabad in eight matches and was able to win a couple of games.
Manish Pandey (2021)
Manish Pandey also led SRH on one occasion in 2021, which was a forgettable season for the team as they failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time.
Pandey's captaincy couldn't make a difference in the performance of the team, as SRH lost that particular game.
Aiden Markram (2023)
South Africa's T20I captain Aiden Markram was appointed as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad following his heroics as the skipper of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the inaugural edition of SA20.
Markram wasn't able to turn things around for the former champions as Sunrisers Hyderabad ended their fourth consecutive season on the wrong half of the point table.
Pat Cummins (2024-2025)
Sunrisers Hyderabad banked their hopes on World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins to get things in order for the team that was struggling for the last four years. Cummins did so by allowing the team to play a fearless brand of cricket.
The decision to appoint Cummins as the captain of the side paid dividends as SRH made it to the final in 2024.
Things, however, didn't go according to plan in the season gone by as the same attacking approach came to haunt the team badly, as Sunrisers Hyderabad ended the season with a string of below-par performances.
