Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie revealed that injured batter James McCollum would’ve come to the crease to bat again if Andy McBrine was one hit away from scoring his maiden Test century. Andy McBrine remained unbeaten with 86 runs when Ireland lost their No. 11 batter in their second inning.

James McCollum was forced to walk off the field after suffering a severe ankle injury. McCollum decided to retire hurt in the 9th over of their second innings, when he was on a score of 12 runs off 26 balls. The right-handed batter decided not to come to bat again at the end, which can aggravate an injury.

Speaking after the game, Andy Balbirnie said that McCollum was padded up and would’ve attempted to bat again if McBrine had been close to his hundred.

“He had the pads on, he had the boot on, it was all a bit chaotic in there. Andy actually came in at tea and said he doesn’t want him to bat. They’re good mates and he [McCollum] is really sore,” Balbirnie said.

Mark Adair and Andy McBrine added a 163-run stand for the seventh wicket, which was Ireland’s highest in Test cricket. Earlier, Andrew Balbirnie and Paul Stirling held the record of 115 runs against Sri Lanka. Adair was dismissed by Matthew Potts for 88 runs, including 12 fours and 2 sixes.

Stuart Broad picked up wicket No. 11 batter Graham Hume to restrict the opposition to 362 runs. Opener Zak Crawly needed four balls to wrap up the match by smashing three boundaries.

“He really didn’t want him to hobble out on the boot, but it was eventually agreed that if it was one hit away, that he would go out, and just hold up an end. And so it was chaos.

“He came out on the balcony with the crutches at tea time and a couple of members looked over and couldn’t really believe what they were seeing,” Balbirnie said.

“It was quite entertaining. If the shoe was on the other foot, if you’ll pardon the pun, I think Andy would have gone out for Prince [McCollum]. But it wasn’t to be. In the end, it didn’t really matter, but it was fairly chaotic at tea,” he concluded.
