Legendary Indian spinner and former head coach Anil Kumble has strongly defended Shubman Gill and put the entire blame on Yashasvi Jaiswal for his heartbreaking run-out on Day 2 of the ongoing second and final Test against the West Indies at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who looked unstoppable on Day 1, was run out for 175 after a dreadful mix-up with captain Shubman Gill that silenced the Delhi crowd and stunned the dressing room. Resuming his innings at 173, the young Indian opener looked confident and composed as he took guard to build on his brilliant start.

But just two overs into the morning session, disaster struck. The Mumbaikar pushed a delivery from Jayden Seales straight to mid-off and instantly sprinted for a single. However, Gill showed no sign of responding to the call and stayed at the non-strikers’ end.
This proved too costly for Yashasvi, as Tagenarine Chanderpaul fired in a sharp throw, and wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach whipped off the bails in a flash.
The entire stadium fell silent as Jaiswal, visibly frustrated, made the long walk back to the pavilion, just 25 runs short of his memorable double hundred. It was a cruel end to his dominant innings, and Kumble described it as a clear misjudgment by the young opener.
It was Yashasvi Jaiswal's fault: Anil Kumble
The former Indian head coach has pointed out that there was no real run available since the shot had gone straight to the fielder, leaving Jaiswal with no chance of making his ground.
Anil Kumble said during the post-lunch show on Jio Hotstar, "It was Yashasvi Jaiswal's fault. He wouldn't have made it even to the non-striker's end because it went straight to the mid-off fielder. There was absolutely no chance.
The only doubt was whether the keeper had full control of the ball when the bails came off. But the umpire didn’t even refer it to the third umpire, and that to me was a bit of a surprise.”

Adding to the disappointment, Kumble also pointed out that Jaiswal’s rhythm seemed slightly different from his first day at the crease. The youngster appeared more eager to push the scoring rate instead of settling back into his steady and composed tempo that shocked Kumble.
The legendary spinner further added, “His approach today was slightly different. I thought he would go back to his yesterday morning’s first-session mindset, but he continued from where he left off last evening. That to me was a bit of a surprise. He was set for a long, long innings.”
Daren Ganga blames Shubman Gill’s delay for Yashasvi Jaiswal’s run-out drama
Meanwhile, the former West Indies opener Daren Ganga has also shared his views on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dramatic run-out. Ganga blamed a mix of misjudgement and delayed response from Shubman Gill for Yashasvi’s run-out in Delhi.
Daren Ganga said on the same show, “It was risky; he shouldn’t have taken it, especially being well set at the start of a new day. But from the coaching manual, you’d say the non-striker should respond to his partner, but Gill was ball watching. His delayed response left Jaiswal stranded.”
