Former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar has compared Rohit Sharma’s captaincy to that of the legendary captain Sourav Ganguly. Rohit Sharma has received praise from all over for his leadership in the ongoing competition.

While there were concerns that recent failures in ICC competitions might affect the Indian captain and his teammates, the Mumbai star has led the team with great aplomb so far. India have looked almost invincible in the tournament so far and have made light work of all the teams they have faced. As of now, they are the only unbeaten team in the competition.

Last week, they became the first team to make it to the semifinals and currently have eight wins from eight. Barring the top-order collapse against Australia in the first game, India have faced very little difficulty in beating the opposition so far.

Rohit Sharma compared to Sourav Ganguly:

With Team India firing on all cylinders under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, Bangar has compared him to ex-India skipper Sourav Ganguly. The former India batting coach said that the current captain’s USP is that he has backed players who were out injured for a long time and were low in confidence.

A number of players such as KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and even Jasprit Bumrah returned to action after long injury layoffs just before the World Cup. As the players were low on match practice, there were suggestions from several quarters to not include them in the World Cup squad. However, Rohit Sharma backed all of them and the players have very much justified their captain’s decision.

“I believe his USP is that he’s backed the players who were injured and low on confidence. Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah these 3 players were making comebacks after injury, and they were given the confidence that they were a part of this team, that the team believed in their abilities, and that they would get opportunities,” Sanjay Bangar said on Star Sports.

“When any captain says this, it’s above everything for a player. Another captain who did something similar is Saurav Ganguly when he identified Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, and Ashish Nehra. So, this is one fantastic contribution by Rohit Sharma as a captain,” he added.

Team India will be looking to extend their winning run when they take on the Netherlands in their final league game. The match is scheduled to take place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on November 12.
