Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting criticized England pacer Ollie Robinson following his spat with Usman Khawaja during the first Test of the ongoing Ashes series. Ricky Ponting said that Ollie Robinson did not need to mention his name and that the pacer should focus on the present.

Ollie Robinson gave an aggressive send-off to Usman Khawaja after dismissing him in the first inning at Edgbaston in Birmingham. In a press conference, the right-arm pacer defended his sledging and stated that the Australian cricketers will have to handle such situations in the Ashes.

In the ICC Review podcast, Ricky Ponting said that Ollie Robinson should focus on his own performance rather than looking at Ashes history.

“As I said after Ollie Robinson said what he said, this England cricket team hasn’t played against Australia and they’ll find out pretty quickly what playing Ashes cricket and playing against a good Australian cricket team is all about,” Ponting said.

“And if Ollie Robinson hasn’t learned that already after last week, then he’s a slow learner. Some of the things he had to say – I mean he even brought my name into it, which I felt was a little bit unusual, but for me it’s water off a duck’s back,” he added.

He’ll Learn Pretty Quickly – Ricky Ponting

The World Cup-winning captain said that Robinson must improve his performance after starting a war of words with the Australian players.

“If he is sitting back thinking about me, then no wonder he bowled like the way that he did in that game, if he’s worried about what I did 15 years ago,” he continued.

“He’ll learn pretty quickly that if you’re going to talk to Australian cricketers in an Ashes series, then you want to be able to back it up with your skills,” he concluded.

Robinson contributed to Australia’s collapse in the first innings, picking up three wickets. The 29-year-old provided a crucial breakthrough on the final day by dismissing Cameron Green, but the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the series.
