Former England limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan believes that the victory in the first Test of the Ashes 2023 series was a defining moment for Pat Cummins’ captaincy. Eoin Morgan pointed out that Pat Cummins was a little bit more defensive with his approach, but they managed to win the match.

Pat Cummins scored an unbeaten 44 runs in a 281-run chase against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday, June 21. The Australian skipper fought hard in the final hour of the match, adding a 55-run stand with Nathan Lyon for the ninth wicket to guide the team to get a 1-0 lead in the series.

In a conversation with Sky Sports, Eoin Morgan praised Nathan Lyon for his crucial contribution with the bat in the crunch moments of the game, in the absence of Mitchell Starc.

“I think it is (a defining moment for Cummins). Given how much strategy has gone behind their win, they’ve got a little bit away from the tactics. Little bit more defensive. But getting to that finish line has been the objective and they have managed against the run of play a little bit,” he told Sky Sports.

Taking Down Moeen Ali With The Ease – Kumar Sangakkara

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara praised Usman Khawaja and said that he displayed an impressive temperament throughout the match. Sangakkara pointed out that Khawaja played Moeen Ali with ease on the turning track.

“He did (start the series beautifully). Amazingly impressive temperament, great kind of tempo to the innings in terms of just buckling down for the long hauling, the same in the first innings. Allowing partnerships to build and confidence from the non-strike watching Usman Khawaja just hit everything with the middle of the bat,” Kumar Sangakkara said.

Usman Khawaja was named Player of the Match after scoring his 15th hundred in the longer format of the game. He scored his maiden Test hundred in England and became the second Australian batter to bat on all five days of the Test.
