Former England cricketer Mark Butcher talked about David Warner’s struggle against Stuart Broad in the Test format. He said that the batter has both mental as well technical issues against the English pacer and it’s difficult to answer how he can come out of this.

David Warner has yet again fallen prey to Stuart Broad, who has made batter his bunny in the longest format of the game. The English pacer has made life torrid for the Australian opener in the ongoing Ashes 2023 as he has removed him three times this series.

David Waner, who got out 7 times to Stuart Broad in Ashes 2019, has been getting dismissed similarly in this series. The Australian batter has managed scores of 36, 66, 25, four, and one in this series.

In the ongoing Test at Headingley, Stuart Broad removed David Warner in both innings and the overall tally of him removing in this format went to 17. The batter averages just around 25 against him. In England, the numbers are even more pleasing for the pacer as he has removed the opening batter 11 times.

Mark Butcher said that Stuart Broad has got in David Warner’s head and he has no answers how the batter gets away from it. He suggested him to run down the track. While speaking to Sky Sports, he said:

“It is technical and mental. In the first place, it starts off as technical, trying to adjust to the angle from around the wicket. Broad is an expert at getting that ball to move away late having created the angle back at the stumps. When that happens two or three times, it gets in your head.

“It drives you completely insane.I can’t come up with an answer as to how he gets away from it, apart from running down the wicket, getting a thigh pad on it and getting up the other end and waiting until the spell is over. It looks like it is going to happen every time, Broad expects it to happen every time.”

Mark Butcher further compared David Warner with Kumar Sangakkara and said that the batter goes hard at the ball. He explained:

“Warner’s issue is that he goes so hard at the ball. Even if he plays as Kumar says, because he is thrusting his hands at the ball so hard, if he does nick the ball it always carries [to the slip cordon]. Kumar allowed the ball to come to him. If there is movement but you are not going towards it, you can hold the line and the ball goes past, or you can pull the bat on the inside.”

Ashes 2023: “There are very few people who get to call their closing moment,” Mark Butcher on David Warner’s statement on his retirement

David Warner recently opened up about his Test retirement and said that he might play his last match in Australia against Pakistan. Commenting on the same, Mark Butcher called it presumptuous.

He said that only greats dare to announce their retirement this way but Warner doesn’t fall in that category as whenever there’ll be talk about him, Stuart Broad’s name will pop up.

Mark Butcher further added that if Australia didn’t win the series, clouds will hover over David Warner’s face as they might look for a replacement. He said:

“It is a bit presumptuous. There are very few people who get to call their closing moment and they tend to be the absolute greats of the game. Warner has been an excellent player but there comes a time when somebody else makes that call for you and if Broad keeps knocking him over…

“I suppose if Australia win this Test match and win the Ashes there might be a sentimental reason to let him carry on and continue to The [Kia] Oval and the fanfare there. But if they lose and the series is still alive, then perhaps that conversation begins about taking him out of the firing line and finding a replacement. One thing he has got in his favour is his catching at slip,” He concluded.
