Young middle-order batter Tilak Varma has been included in India’s squad for the upcoming edition of the Aisa Cup, which is set to begin on August 31. Tilak Varma received his maiden call-up from the national team for the first time in the 50-over format in international cricket.
Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the men’s selection committee, unveiled the squad for the Asia Cup on Monday, August 21. Rohit Sharma will lead the 17-member squad in the six-team tournament. Wicketkeeper batter Sanju Samson has been dropped from the squad for the Asia Cup.
Tilak Varma Named In India’s Squad For Asia Cup
Tilak Varma hasn’t made his debut for the Men in Blue in the ODI format so far. The left-handed batter impressed with his batting in his debut T20I series against the West Indies. He scored 173 runs in five innings with an excellent average of 57.67 and a strike rate of 140.65.
However, the 20-year-old batter failed to make an impact with the bat in the ongoing three-match T20I series against Ireland. The batter registered scores of 0 and 1 in the first two games. The selectors and team management backed him and fast-tracked him into the ODI setup.

Apart from Tilak Varma, Shryeas Iyer, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, and Prasidh Krishna are the notable inclusions in the Indian squad. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are added to the squad without match practise, while Bumrah and Prasidh are playing in the T20I series against Ireland.
The Rohit Sharma-led team will take on the Babar Azam-led team in their first match of the tournament in Pallekele on Saturday, September 2. The Men in Blue will face the Nepal National Cricket Team in their second match at the same venue on Monday, September 4.
