India have suffered a big blow ahead of their high-voltage clash against Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup. The Men in Blue will open their campaign in Asia Cup 2023 on Saturday (September 2) by taking on the arch-rivals in Pallekele. And they will have to play the game without KL Rahul, one of the most important members of the ODI team.
The wicketkeeper-batsman has been included in the squad for the Asia Cup. He was on the sidelines for almost three months and has not played a competitive game since suffering a thigh injury while fielding during a match in IPL 2023 in May. KL Rahul had to undergo surgery and was recently given the green light for his fitness.
However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had revealed that KL Rahul was likely to miss a few games in the Asia Cup after suffering a niggle. Agarkar confirmed the development on August 21 while announcing the squad for the Asia Cup. However, KL Rahul showed little discomfort in the preparatory camp in Bengaluru and even kept the wickets.
His display at the camp made many believe that he might just be fit for the tournament opener against Pakistan. But it looks like the team management is in no mood to take any risk with KL Rahul’s fitness ahead of the World Cup.
On Tuesday, India head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed that the right-handed batsman would not play against Pakistan as well as Nepal. Before departing for Sri Lanka, Dravid confirmed that KL Rahul will be missing both the group games.
“He’s had a really good week with us,” head coach Rahul Dravid said. “Really done well, done a lot of things. He’s progressing really well on the route that we want to take. “But he will be unavailable for the first part [of the Asia Cup], for the Kandy leg of the trip,” Rahul Dravid said.
“The NCA will be looking after him for the next few days while we are traveling,” the Indian head coach added.
“We will reassess on 4 September and take it from there. But the signs are looking good and he’s progressing really well. He will be unavailable for the first two games,” Rahul Dravid further stated.

KL Rahul’s replacement:
With KL Rahul out of both the group games, Ishan Kishan is likely to be the wicketkeeper. Sanju Samson will also travel with the team as a reserve wicketkeeper but is unlikely to get the nod ahead of Kishan. In the batting department, both Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav could get a chance in the playing eleven in the absence of KL Rahul.
