Asia Cup 2023: Litton Das Front-Runner For ODI Captaincy Till Shakib Al Hasan Gives His Acceptance - Reports

In what has been the latest development as per the reports in Cricbuzz, it is learned that Litton Das is still in contention to become the ODI captain as Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is still waiting for a response from Shakib Al Hasan for the role.

The ODI captaincy of the Bangladesh Cricket Team came up for grabs after Tamim Iqbal stepped down as the leader of the team. The BCB approached Shakib Al Hasan to take up the role but as per various media, the all-rounder has expressed his disinterest.

Amid all this Litton Das is the automatic choice to lead the team as he is the vice-captain of the team and was named as the leader when Tamim Iqbal called his retirement, which he took it back after talks with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

BCB in their recent meeting announced that they would announce their next ODI skipper on or before August 12 and it’s fair to say that we might get a clear picture in the next two or three days as a deadline to announce the squad for the Asia Cup 2023 is nearing too.

Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha said that BCB President is in talks with Shakib Al Hasan but if he didn’t agree then they will have to look at other options. Speaking to Cricbuzz, he said:

“Our president (BCB) is talking with Shakib to know his mind and if he agrees to lead the ODI squad it is one thing, otherwise we need to think about other options. “

As per the reports, Litton Das was recently called by BCB and was asked whether he is looking to get the ODI captaincy on a full-time basis. He, however, left the decision to the board, saying that if the opportunity comes his way he will give his best. He explained:

“This (captaincy) is a matter of the Cricket Board. You will know about it (captaincy) in one or two days. Rather than me talking about it if you get it from the board it will be better. I don’t think it will be wise for me to speak about it from any point because I am the employee of the board and also get paid by them.

Just wait for a while because within one or two days you will have a clear picture. Because I am playing for a long time, if the team wants something good from me, I also try to give something good to the country. I will try to give my hundred percent (if selected as the captain) which I always do,” he concluded.
