The Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 games might be shifted out of Colombo after continuous rains in the city over the last few days. The Asian Cricket Council is pondering changing the venue for the Super 4 stage as per reports in Indian Express.

The reports further say that teams have been informed about the situation and that Pallekele and Dambulla are seen as the alternate venues for staging the Super 4. The Asia Cup 2023 is hosted in a hybrid model with Pakistan and Sri Lanka both hosting the tournament. As per the original schedule, four matches were to be played in Pakistan and as many as nine in Sri Lanka including the Super 4 stage and the final on September 13.

ACC Pondering To Move Out Super 4 Stage Out Of Colombo

Sri Lanka was chosen as one of the hosts after India’s refusal to play in Pakistan. Indian Express also reported that when the ACC chose Sri Lanka as the other venue Sri Lanka Cricket had suggested hosting the event in Dambulla with no rain threat, unlike Pallekele and Colombo.

The report further says that due to the reluctance of the broadcasters and teams traveling to Dambulla. Pallekele and Colombo were chosen as venues in Sri Lanka for the tournament. This is the monsoon season in the Island nation and the game between India and Pakistan was washed out due to rain. Both teams shared a point each.

Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 Stage Under Threat In Colombo

The situation in Colombo was expected to get better but the recent rains have added to the headache of the ACC and forced them to think about an alternative venue. The first Super 4 match in Colombo is on September 9, but the recent continuous rain in the city has made the ACC think.

Sri Lanka does not host matches in Colombo generally in the month of September with this being the monsoon season. In case the venue hosts the Super 4 matches of the Asia Cup, it needs a miracle to keep the rain away.

The ACC is expected to make a decision on a possible venue change in the next 24-48 hours. There is a rain threat in Pallekele as well as per reports. The league stage of the Asia Cup 2023 ends on September 6 with Sri Lanka and Afghanistan playing the game in Lahore.
