Asia Cup 2023 Schedule Announcement Delayed As Pakistan Come Up With More Demands

While the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has accepted Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) hybrid model for Asia Cup 2023, the latter seems to be having more conditions for the tournament.

While Pakistan were originally awarded the hosting rights for the tournament, India refused to travel to the country due to the bilateral relations. It raised the possibility of the tournament being played at a different venue. Consequently, Pakistan threatened to boycott the competition before the PCB suggested that hybrid model.

While they had proposed UAE as a neutral venue, other countries refused it because of the harsh weather conditions. And in the end, Sri Lanka were finalized as the other venue. As per the hybrid model, Sri Lanka and Pakistan will co-host the competition. The ACC has announced that while Pakistan will host four games, Sri Lanka will be hosting the other nine.

PCB wants more games in Asia Cup 2023:

After the ACC accepted the hybrid model, it was expected that the PCB would give the tournament the green light. However, the PCB has one more demand before they take a final call on Asia Cup 2023. According to a report in Cricket Pakistan, the PCB officials have demanded for more games in Pakistan.

The PCB authorities have stated that there is a possibility of rain during four matches assigned to Pakistan and have asked for more games. With all the teams barring India set to travel to Pakistan, the PCB has told ACC that there won’t be any issues regarding logistics.

Another demand from the PCB is that they want to host the games in two cities. While all four games were expected to be played in Lahore, the PCB wants a few games in Multan too. The PCB reportedly wants Asia Cup 2023 to begin in Multan with the game between Pakistan and Nepal.

PCB chief Zaka Ashraf initiated initial discussions with Asian cricket officials in Durban, South Africa, regarding this matter. Further deliberations will take place at the ACC meeting in Dubai. The schedule for Asia Cup 2023 was expected to be announced on Friday (July 14) but PCB’s new demands have delayed the announcement.
