Asian Games 2023 is witnessing the participation of the India National Cricket Team for the first time. BCCI announced the squad on 14th July 2023 naming Ruturaj Gaikwad as the Captain of the side. The Women’s Cricket event in Asian Games saw India winning the Gold Medal beating Sri Lanka in the final. Talking about the Men’s team former India cricketer WV Raman expressed his views on who should be the first-choice wicketkeeper for India in the event.

The Indian Squad for the Asian Games consists of two wicketkeeper-batters in the form of Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma. Both of them have shared the dressing room playing for Punjab Kings in the IPL. Prabhsimran Singh is known for utilising the powerplay overs and his strike rate during the powerplay is quite impressive while Jitesh is someone who bats down the order finishing the innings.

WV Raman picks Jitesh Sharma over Prabhsimran Singh because according to him Prabhsimran is an opener and the opening spot is going to be fixed for the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad. “Between Prabhsimran and Jitesh, I’ll go for Jitesh, because Prabhsimran is more of an opener and he has to have runs under his belt; he has to tonk the spinners. That’s something that you can’t blame him for because he is used to opening right from his Under-16 days.”

“Jitesh Sharma has been fantastic not only in terms of his consistency but also in terms of reading the situation and playing according to the situation, even though he might perhaps get to play anywhere between three to 20 deliveries. So in all those situations that he’s encountered in the IPL, he has done extraordinarily well. Also, I feel that cricket and wicketkeeping skills-wise, I think Jitesh at the moment will perhaps have an edge over Prabhsimran.”

Indian Squad For The Asian Games 2023:

Ruturaj Gaikwad (Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rahul Tripathi, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Shivam Mavi, Shivam Dube, Prabhsimran Singh (wk)

Standby list of players: Yash Thakur, Sai Kishore, Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Hooda, Sai Sudarsan.

The first match for India will be played on 3rd October which will be the Quarter Final itself. Hopefully, India will win the Gold Medal in the Men’s Cricket event and will establish their supremacy in the continent.
